What is a straight bill of lading?
A straight bill of lading is non-negotiable. The freight is consigned to one named party, and only that party can take delivery — the document cannot be signed over to somebody else en route. It is the standard document for domestic LTL freight, and it is what this generator produces.
Why it matters
Non-negotiable is the right default for almost every domestic shipment. You know who is receiving the goods and you do not want the paperwork to be transferable.
The mistake that costs money
Using a straight BOL when the goods are being sold in transit or paid against documents. A straight BOL gives the bank or the buyer no control over the freight, because possession of the paper does not control possession of the goods.
Worth knowing
- Non-negotiable. Delivery goes to the named consignee, full stop.
- Usually marked "non-negotiable" or "straight" on the face of the document.
- The standard for domestic LTL and truckload freight in the US.
- The consignee does not need to surrender an original to take delivery.
