What is a VICS bill of lading?
The VICS bill of lading is a standardised format developed for the retail supply chain. It is what large retailers require on inbound shipments, and it is built around scannable carton-level identifiers and tight purchase-order matching so a receiving dock can process a trailer without reading prose.
Why it matters
Retail routing guides mandate it, and a non-compliant document is one of the most common causes of a chargeback. The format is not a suggestion when you are shipping into a major retailer.
The mistake that costs money
Sending a generic BOL into a retailer whose routing guide specifies VICS. The shipment may be received, but the compliance deduction lands on your remittance advice weeks later.
